Breaking open a close game in the third stanza, the Monett Cubs notched a 41-14 triumph over the visiting Carl Junction Bulldogs in a Big 8 Conference outing last Friday night.

Quarterback play by the Cubs turned out to be the key. Tyler Green and Kyle Woods combined to score three touchdowns. In addition, the duo passed for 253 yards, resulting in one TD and setting up the other scores.

Quick start

Monett got off to a quick start in the contest. After stopping the Bulldogs on a fake punt attempt following Carl Junction's opening possession, the Cubs took a lead they would not relinquish.
First down passes of nine yards from Green to Chris Eimer and 12 yards from Green to Broc Wolfe enabled the Cubs to move deep into Carl Junction territory. Green's five-yard run and a nine-yard burst by Aaron Hall netted first downs to get Monett inside the five. Hall capped the drive with a four-yard touchdown run. The extra point by Eimer made the score 7-0 with 6:39 left in the opening period.
After allowing one first down, Monett's defensive unit forced a punt with the Cubs taking over on the 28-yard line. Monett struck quickly. Green passed to Kurran Blamey in the flats, and Blamey out-raced the Bulldog defenders for a 72-yard TD. Eimer's point after upped the Cub lead to 14-0 with 4:27 remaining in the first quarter.

Back in the game

Carl Junction was able to get back in the game shortly. Following a Bulldog punt, the Cubs turned the ball over on a fumble. The turnover gave the visitors excellent field position at the 17-yard line. It took the Bulldogs three plays to cut Monett's lead in half.

The touchdown came on a one-yard plunge by Trent Landes. The extra point by Chase Marrs made the score 14-7 in favor of the Cubs with 2:09 to go in the quarter.

Undaunted, the Cubs bounced right back. A 31-yard pass from Green to Wolfe put Monett into Carl Junction territory. A 10-yard pass from Green to Matt Schiffner on the first play of the second quarter moved the Cubs inside the 10. Three plays later, Green snuck the ball into the end zone. Eimer's extra point made the tally 21-7 in favor of Monett with 10:24 left until intermission.

The visitors answered, however, putting together their best offensive drive of the night. Carl Junction went 56 yards in 15 plays to get close again. The touchdown came on a one-yard sneak by quarterback Drew Snyder. The extra point by Marrs made the count 21-14 with 4:15 to go in the half.
Carl Junction's final serious threat came when the Bulldogs got the ball back by recovering the onsides kick. Three plays later the opportunity ended when Monett's Eimer intercepted a Bulldog pass.

Taking charge

Monett took charge of the game early in the third stanza. After an onsides kick attempt by the Bulldogs failed to go the necessary 10 yards, Monett began the second half in good field position at the 44 yard line.

The Cubs covered those yards in seven plays behind the fine offensive line work of Jeffrey Craft, Jared Childress, Ryno Johnson and Reese Bounous. The touchdown came on a one-yard dive by Green. The extra point by Eimer upped the advantage to 28-14 with 8:52 to go in the quarter.

Defensive play by the Cubs, led by Ethan Davis, Kyle Doss, Jacob Childress and Schiffner, continued to shut down Carl Junction and the Bulldogs were forced to punt. A sparkling 60-yard return by Marcus Enloe put Monett close to the goal but a pass interception ended the scoring chance.
The Cubs quickly forced another punt on Carl Junction's next possession, and this time would get the score. Behind the passing of Green, Monett moved the ball steadily down the field and got the TD on a five-yard run by Hall. When the point after failed, the score was 34-14 in favor of the Cubs with 26 seconds to play in the quarter.

One more score

With the Monett defensive bunch controlling the Bulldogs, the Cub offense would get one more score in the last period.

Monett regained possession of the ball at their own 35-yard line on a pass theft by Eimer. The Cubs then went 65 yards in eight plays to get on the scoreboard again.

With Kyle Woods now at quarterback and Green switching to wide receiver, Woods passed to Green for 39 yards to the 13-yard line. Three plays later Woods got the TD on a nine-yard keeper. Eimer's extra point ended the scoring at 41-14 with 9:14 remaining in the contest. Reserves saw most of the action for both teams the rest of the way.

Hall was Monett's leading ball carrier with 76 yards rushing on 23 carries. Landes gained 84 yards on 23 rushes for the Bulldogs. Green completed 12 of 17 passes for 208 yards for the Cubs.
This Friday the Cubs travel to Aurora to take on the Houn' Dawgs in another Big 8 clash.

Touchdowns: Monett--Blamey, Woods, Green 2, Hall 2. Carl Junction--Lanes, Snyder. Extra point kicks: Monett--Eimer 5. Carl Junction: Marrs 2.
