Rallying Cub gridders fall short to Lamar Tigers

Monday, September 20, 2010

Penalties, pass interceptions and a punt return for a touchdown cost Monett Friday night as the Cubs lost 27-21 to the host Lamar Tigers in a Big 8 Conference football contest on the road.

While the Cubs had more offensive yardage, 294 to 267, and both teams had three rushing touchdowns, it was the second quarter punt return for a TD following a big penalty against Monett that proved to be the deciding points.

Early lead

Monett, 1-3 on the season and 0-1 in the league, took the early lead midway through the first quarter.

The Cubs managed three first downs following the opening kickoff but then were stopped and had to punt. On Lamar's second play from scrimmage, Reese Bounous, of the Cubs, recovered a Tiger fumble at the 26-yard line. It took Monett five plays to score.

Quarterback Tyler Green passed nine yards and then 11 yards to wide receiver Chris Eimer to get the Cubs close. The touchdown came on a two-yard run by Aaron Hall. The extra point by Eimer gave the Cubs a 7-0 lead with 6:18 to play in the opening period.

Lamar retaliated, driving 71 yards in 12 plays, aided by two Monett penalties, to tie the contest. The TD came on a one-yard plunge by Markell White. Ben Bailey's extra point made it 7-7 with 1:09 left in the first quarter.
After the Lamar kick-off to start the second quarter resulted in a touchback, putting the ball on the 20-yard line, the Cubs were saddled with a 15-yard penalty to put Monett in the hole on the five-yard line.
Needing 25 yards for a first down and unable to accomplish it, Monett had to punt from eight. White gathered the ball in at the 40 and raced down the sidelines to return the punt for a TD on the second play of the second quarter. Bailey's extra point made the score 14-7 in favor of the Tigers with 11:42 remaining until the half.
Following the ensuing kick-off, the Cubs mounted a threat midway through the quarter, racking up three first downs and reaching the 26 yard line before another penalty set the Cubs back 10 yards. The march then stalled and Monett turned the ball over on downs.

Electrifying run

The home team received the kickoff following intermission and started a drive which sputtered on the 21-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage by the Cubs, Hall ripped off an electrifying run of 71 yards to set Monett up just nine yards from the end zone. Two plays later Andy Hagedorn carried the ball over for the Cub touchdown. Eimer's point after knotted the score at 14-14 with 6:15 to go in the third period.
Lamar, behind the running of White and quarterback Brett Campbell, came right back. The Tigers marched 68 yards in 10 plays to go ahead for good. The TD came on a seven-yard burst by White. The extra point by Bailey made it 21-14 in Lamar's favor with 2:06 remaining in the third stanza.
Near the end of the quarter the Tigers would have the ball back again on a pass interception at the 44-yard line. As the game entered the last quarter, Lamar moved the ball steadily downfield and took a two-touchdown lead on a TD by White from three yards out. The extra point try failed, leaving the Tigers ahead 27-14 with 9:02 remaining in the game.

Comeback attempt

Behind the fine offensive line play of Jared Childress, Kyle Doss, Jeffrey Craft and Ryno Johnson, the Cubs mounted a comeback attempt.

Monett drove the ball 69 yards in 12 plays to get on the scoreboard again. The touchdown came on a three-yard slash by Hall. The extra point by Eimer made the score 27-21 in favor of the Tigers with 3:20 left to play.

The Cubs did stop the Tigers and forced a punt at this juncture, but the punt pinned Monett back on the six-yard line with only two minutes to go in the contest. The Cubs were able to get one first down with time winding down but then gave up the ball on a pass interception. The game ended two plays later.
Hall was the leading ball carrier for Monett, gaining 126 yards on 21 attempts. White piled up 166 yards on 35 rushes for Lamar. Green completed 11 of 24 passes for the Cubs, good for 147 yards.
This Friday, the Cubs will be at home against Carl Junction in a conference encounter.
Touchdowns: Monett--Hagedorn, Hall 2. Lamar--White 4. Extra point kicks: Monett--Eimer 3. Lamar--Bailey 3.
