The Monett Lady Cubs softball team notched another victory Thursday night with a 7-4 win over Southwest.
Monett used a four-run third inning and build a 7-2 lead.
"I thought our girls did a good job at the plate tonight," Cubs Coach Ty Goetz said. "We have been working on proper hitting technique, and tonight the girls demonstrated the results of that effort."
The Lady Pirates led off the top of the sixth inning with back-to-back singles. The runners advanced to second and third on a passed ball.
With two on and no outs, Southwest's Cady Swindle came to the plate. She hit a screaming line drive that was caught by third baseman Josee Krueger caught.
The next batter hit a sharp ground ball to Krueger who looked the runner back to third then fired the ball across the diamond to get the runner at first.
Pitcher Raigan Ratliff struck out the next batter to end Southwest's threat.
"That defensive stand was huge," Goetz said. "Krueger is the girl we want teams to hit to. She might make the occasional error, but more times than not she makes the play. If either one of those balls gets through, it is a brand new ball game."
Ratliff got the win. She pitched seven innings, struck out nine and allowed nine hits.
Krueger was two for four with two runs scored and a triple. Kelsey Wiseman went three for three with two runs scored and two RBIs.
The Lady Cubs are in action next Tuesday when they host the Lady Bulldogs of Carl Junction.
