Lady Cubs softball splits games

Wednesday, September 15, 2010

The Monett Lady Cubs softball team defeated Seneca 18-4 Tuesday night.

Monett's Paige Marney got the win. She pitched five innings, allowed five hits and struck out five.

Raigan Ratliff went three for four with four runs scored and two RBIs.

Monett fell 9-8 to Nevada Monday night.

"I knew it would be a tough game," Head Coach Ty Goetz said. "Nevada is 11-0 and a very solid club."

The Lady Cubs had success against the Lady Tigers.

In the second inning Monett scored five times. Josee Krueger hit a lead-off triple and scored on a passed ball.

Kelsey Wiseman hit a one- out single, and Avery Bounous reached on a error.

The next batter Shana Paulsen bunted and reached on a throwing error, scoring Wiseman and Bounous.

Raigan Ratliff reached base on an error, and Paulsen and Ratliff both scored on a two-out double by Andrea Soriano.

The Lady Tigers would add a run in the top of the third, three more runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to build a 9-5 lead.

The Lady Cubs knew they had work to do in their last at bat.

Marney led off the bottom of the seventh with a single. Jessica Harper entered the game to run for Marney. Krueger followed with another single.

Harper and Krueger advanced to second and third on a passed ball. Harper scored on a hit by Wiseman. Bounous then hit a one-out double to score Krueger and Wiseman.

Bounous was stranded at second to end the game.

"I was pleased with the way we kept battling," said Goetz. "We had too many miscues in the field and left too many runners on though.

"We had runners at first and second with no outs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings but were only able to score three runs off those situtions," Goetz said. "Despite the setback the Lady Cubs discovered more about their team.

"We know that we can compete with very good clubs," said Goetz. "If we play our game and minimize the mistakes, we have a chance to win. As a coach that is what you want from your team in every game, a chance to win."

The Lady Cubs will be at home next Tuesday against Carl Junction.
