Verona volleyball takes second

Monday, September 13, 2010

The Verona Lady Wildcats (7-2) took second place in the Verona Invitational Tournament on Saturday.

"The girls played well all day," Verona Head Coach Brad Stewart said. "We are still a young team."

Six of the team's seven starters are underclassmen.

In pool play Verona swept Golden City, 25-19, 25-11. Then the Lady Wildcats handled Galena, 25-12, 25-21, and then topped Billings, 25-23, 25-20.

Verona advanced to the semi-final round where they defeated Purdy, 25-13, 25-11.

That set up a finals match-up against Exeter. Verona fell 25-19, 25-22.

"Exeter has a good team," Stewart said. "I thought we didn't play to our potential. We played on our heels a little. "Credit the Exeter ladies for taking advantage of the opportunities they had," Stewart added. "All things considered, there where six other teams that wanted to be in the championship game. I am still proud of the girls' effort."

The Verona Lady Wildcats will play host to the Marionville Lady Comets on Tuesday night.
