Monett Cubs fall 35-13 to talented Nixa squad

Monday, September 13, 2010

Combining a balanced offense and stellar defense, the visiting Nixa Eagles built a five touchdown lead enroute to dispatching the Monett Cubs 35-13 last Friday night in a non-conference football game at Burl Fowler Stadium.

Nixa, 3-0, dominated the first half. The Eagles forged a 28-0 lead before the Cubs, 1-2, could cross mid-field into Nixa territory.

Field position

Good field position helped Nixa take a 14-0 first quarter lead. The Eagles reached the Monett nine-yard line early in the first stanza, but a fumble recovery by Carlin Ballay halted that threat. After one first and 10, the Cubs had to punt with Nixa gaining good position at the 26-yard line.

The Eagles took advantage of the field position, going the distance in just three plays. The touchdown came on a six-yard run by Josh Liles. The extra point was added by Shelby Harris to put the Eagles ahead 7-0 with 6:49 left in the first period.

Monett was unable to generate any offense following the kick-off and had to punt. The Cubs got the ball back on a fumble recovery by Jeffrey Craft but then gave the ball right back to the visitors on a pass interception.

Taking over just 36 yards away from the end zone, the Eagles went on to score in five plays. The TD came on a four-yard run by Dean Deetz. The extra point by Harris upped the score to 14-0 with 36 seconds to go in the opening stanza.

Second quarter scores

The Eagles would added two more second quarter scores to take command of the game.

After failing to move the ball following their next possession, the Cubs were forced to punt on the second play of the second quarter. Nixa had the ball 45 yards from the end zone and got that yardage in five plays. The touchdown came on a 21-yard pass from quarterback Ben Fisher to wide receiver Brandon Cobb. The extra point by Harris made the score 21-0 in Nixa's favor with 9:06 remaining in the second period.

On the next possession, the Cubs were forced punt the ball away. This time it took Nixa only four plays to travel 47 yards to score. Fisher passed 10 yards to Luke Denbrow for the TD. The point after was tacked on by Harris to build the lead to 28-0 for Nixa with 5:37 to go until intermission.

Cub threat

Late in the half there was a Cub threat as Monett managed to reach the 15-yard line on an 11-yard pass from quarterback Tyler Green to wide receiver Andy Hagedorn, but the threat ended two plays later on a pass interception. The half ended on the next play.
It didn't take long for Nixa to take a five touchdown lead as the second half began. The Cubs turned the ball over on a fumble on their first play from scrimmage, and the Eagles moved the ball 35 yards in four plays to score. The TD came on a four-yard dash by Liles. The extra point was added by Harris to push the score to 35-0 with 10:10 to go in the third stanza.

Scoring drive

Monett was then able to mount a scoring drive, marching 80 yards in 14 plays to get on the scoreboard behind solid offensive line play of Jared Childress, Kyle Doss, Ryno Johnson, Reese Bounous and Craft.

Hagedorn got the drive started with a 33-yard jaunt. First downs were added on runs by Green and Davis, and a pass from Green to Ballay. The Cub touchdown came on a nifty nine-yard run by Green. The extra point by Chris Eimer left Nixa in front 35-7 with 1:46 to play in the third period.

After forcing the Eagles to punt on the next to last play of the quarter, the Cubs would get one more score in the final quarter. Monett moved 63 yards in 10 plays to get the final points of the game

Aaron Hall got the drive started for the Cubs with a seven-yard and he capped it with a four-yard touchdown. The try for the extra point failed, leaving the score at 35-13 with 8:15 left to play.

Nixa did threaten to score late, but a fumble recovery by Davis stopped the Eagles.
Hall was Monett's leading ball carrier with 48 yards rushing on 15 attempts. Liles gained 97 yards for Nixa on 14 carries. Fisher completed 10 of 11 passes for the Eagles, totaling 137 yards. Green completed 12 of 27 aerials for the Cubs for 109 yards.
This Friday the Cubs travel to Lamar to take on the Tigers in Monett's first Big 8 Conference contest of the season.
