Cubs stumble in home opener

Wednesday, September 8, 2010

Capitalizing on Monett mistakes both early and late, the Logan-Rogersville Wildcats spoiled Monett's home opener last Friday night by posting a 26-18 non-conference football decision over the Cubs.

Despite trailing at one time by 16 points, game statistics show the contest was much closer than the final score indicates. In fact, the Cubs outgained the visitors in total yards, 308 to 283, and had only three less first downs, 12 to 15.

But mistakes proved costly for Monett. The Cubs lost four fumbles with one of those turnovers returned for a touchdown.

First quarter threats

In the early going it was the Cubs with no less than three first quarter threats.

A 13-yard pass from quarter Tyler Green to Chris Eimer allowed Monett to enter Wildcat territory on the first play from scrimmage following the opening kickoff. The Cubs managed to reach the 19-yard line before turning the ball over on a fumble.

Ethan Davis got the ball back for Monett six plays later on a fumble recovery near midfield. The Cubs moved to the 31-yard line before relinquishing the ball on downs.

Late in the quarter Monett would threaten once again after getting the ball on a pass interception by Marcus Enloe. The Cubs advanced to the 19-yard line on the last play of the quarter but turned the ball over on a fumble on the first play of the second period.

Long march

The visitors took advantage of this gift and began a long march to take the lead. Led by the running of back Dylan Cole and quarterback Joe Zimmer, the Wildcats drove 79 yards in 16 plays to get on the scoreboard. The touchdown came on a one-yard plunge by Zimmer. The extra point by Brandon Scroggins made the score 7-0 in Logan-Rogersville's favor with 4:35 left in the half.

Game breaker

In the third quarter on the third play from scrimmage following the second half kickoff, Cole broke several tackles near the line of scrimmage and raced down the sidelines for a 74-yard TD. The extra point by Scroggins upped the Wildcat lead to 14-0 with 10:13 to go in the third stanza.

Behind the solid offensive line play of Jared Childress, Kyle Doss, Jeffrey Craft, Ryne Johnson and Reese Bounous, the Cubs fought back.

It took Monett just five plays to cut the Wildcat lead in half after the Logan-Rogersville kickoff. A 15-yard pass from Green to Matt Schiffner put the ball near midfield.

Green then connected with Eimer on a pass play that covered 44 yards to the three-yard line. Running back Aaron Hall then got the Cub touchdown on a three-yard run. Eimer's extra point made the tally 14-7 with 7:45 to go in the quarter.

Monett's defensive crew immediately forced a punt, and the Cubs headed for another score. A 33-yard pass from Green to Broc Wolfe moved Monett to the 19-yard line. Hall then dashed 14 yards to the five. The Cub offense sputtered, and the Cubs elected to try for a field goal. Eimer's 20-yard kick was true to cut Logan-Rogersville's lead to 14-10 with 3:24 remaining in the third period.

Missed chances

While the Cubs defense, led by Andy Hagedorn, Tristen Homfeldt, Davis, Craft, Schiffner and Doss, contained the Wildcats, Monett's offense had a couple of missed chances to take the lead.

Monett reached the 31 yard line on the first play of the final quarter but had to give up possession of the ball on downs.

Eight plays later the Cubs had the ball back on a punt and managed to reach midfield but turned over the ball on a fumble.

Logan-Rogersville took advantage of a miscue and marched 49 yards in 11 plays to regain control of the game. The Wildcats scored on a three-yard burst by Zimmer. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 20-10 with 1:15 left to play.

The Wildcats scored once more in the game to up the score to 26-10 after an unsuccessful two-point conversion.

The Cubs answered with a touchdown of their own. A 46-yard gallop by Hall put the ball on the nine-yard line for Monett. Two plays later Hall got the TD on a two-yard run. Hall then added the two-point conversion run to make the score 26-18 with just two seconds left in the contest.

Hall was the leading ball carrier for the Cubs with 96 yards on 14 rushes. Cole gained 152 yards on 28 tries for Logan-Rogersville. Green completed 10 of 17 passes for a total of 166 yards passing for Monett.

This Friday, the Cubs will again be at home, hosting the Nixa Eagles in a non-conference encounter.
