Clutch hitting is always important in winning games. Thursday night the Monett Lady Cubs' softball team displayed that skill in a 8-0 win over rival Cassville.
"I've always been told that good teams find ways to score with two outs," Lady Cubs Coach Ty Goetz said. "Tonight all of our runs were scored with two outs in the inning."
Leading 3-0 in the third, the Lady Cubs' Raigan Ratliff singled with two outs. She stole second and advanced home on the throw to second.
Katie Upchurch then walked, and Andrea Soriano was hit by a pitch. Paige Marney hit a two-out single to score Upchurch. Josie Krueger doubled to score Soriano, and Kelsey Wiseman then hit a two-out double to score Harper (runner for Marney) and Krueger.
In the sixth inning with two outs, Ratliff was hit by a pitch. Upchurch then walked. Soriano hit a triple to score Ratliff and Upchurch. Then, Soriano scored on a passed ball.
"This is a big win for us," Goetz said. "Cassville is a district opponent. It's important for us to get these wins, so we can get a better seed in the District Tournament."
Marney, who pitched the win, echoed her coach's observation.
"It feels great to get the win," Marney said. "The defense played great behind me, and we hit the ball really well tonight."
"The team and I want to thank Larry Howard and Scott Mark for getting the field ready to play," Goetz added. "They did an awesome job considering how much rain fell on Wednesday."
|Marney pitched seven innings, gave up three hits, walked one and struck out six.|
Ratliff was one for three with two runs scored and three stolen bases. Soriano finished two for three with two runs scored and two RBIs, and Josee Krueger was two for two with one run scored and a RBI.
The Lady Cubs will be in action at Lamar next Tuesday.
A special thanks to Lady Cubs Softball Coach Ty Goetz for the play by play.
