The Monett Cubs soccer team started the 2010 campaign off on the right track with a 5-0 win over Aurora.
"I was really encouraged tonight," Monett Head Coach Jeremy Wilson said. "Our underclassmen stepped up and scored all our goals."
Francisco Morales got the scoring started in the 12th minute. Morales, a sophomore, took a pass from Abraham Mejia and quickly buried the ball in the farside corner of the goal.
In the 32nd minute, Mejia would get another assist. This time he would set up teammate Jorge Aceves, a freshman, for the goal to make it 2-0.
"Mejia is the leader of this team," Wilson said. "He is not that vocal. He leads by example. He really does set the tone for this team."
The Cubs' Morales scored his second goal in the 45th minute. Travis Thompson had the assist.
Mejia centered another pass to freshman teammate Efrain Ceniceros in the 53rd minute for a goal, and Eddie Aceves, another freshman, scored on a penalty kick in the 76th minute.
"Every player that suited up tonight played at least 10 minutes." Wilson said "We had two freshmen score goals (Ceniceros and Aceves).
"One of the things I really like about this team is our depth. I think we showed that tonight," Wilson said. "We were able to wear down Aurora and really do some positive things."
All together the Cubs had 29 shots on goal.
Goalie Freddy Lopez had six saves for the Cubs.
"Freddy is a very quick and athletic goaltender." Wilson said. "Aurora is a district opponent. Getting this win helps our confidence as we begin the season."
The soccer Cubs will be in action next Tuesday night as they travel to Cassville.
