After a shaky start, the Monett Lady Cubs softball team settled down and went to work. They earned a 11-4 season opening victory over the Ash Grove Lady Pirates on Monday night.
The Lady Cubs started the game strong, scoring three runs in the top half of the first inning. Starting pitcher Paige Marney helped her cause by belting a two-out, two-RBI triple.
In the bottom of the first, the Lady Pirates, aided by two Lady Cubs' errors, came back with three runs to tie the game.
"I think it was just nerves on the defensive side," Head Coach Ty Goetz said. "I was proud of the effort the ladies put forth. They were able to rebound and play a solid game.
"Sound fundamentals are essential for any team to be successful," Goetz said. "After the initial shock of the game's start wore off, we settled down."
Marney (1-0) kept the Lady Pirates at bay with her arsenal of pitches.
"Marney is not a pitcher who will go out and overpower an opposing line-up," Goetz said. "She keeps the ball low and gets groundball outs."
The Lady Cubs swung the bat really well.
"We had a good night at the plate," Goetz said. "The girls were seeing the ball and did a good job of hitting it in the gaps."
Raigan Ratliff went three for five with three doubles and three runs scored, Katie Upchurch was two for four4 with three RBI's, Josee Krueger was two for five with two RBI's and Andrea Soriano went three for four with two runs scored.
Marney got the win with seven innings pitched allowing eighty hits four runs, walking two and striking out six.
The Lady Cubs will be in action Friday night at home against Crane.
