On June 16, 1956, in Kansas, she was united in marriage to Bud Batdorf, who preceded her in death. On April 1, 1988, in Shell Knob, Missouri, she married Hal Hughes, who also preceded her in death.
Others preceding her in death were her parents; three brothers: Thomas Wade, Carl Wade and William Cooper and a granddaughter, Amanda May Schmidt.
Surviving relatives are one daughter: Shirley Burnett, of Monett; four grandchildren: James Allen Schmidt, Brenda K. Dewey, Timothy Brian Schmidt and Christine Renea Duncan; 15 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Elma moved from Kansas to Iowa at a young age. She received her education in Seymour, Iowa, where she graduated from high school. For several years she resided in Lincoln, Nebraska, before moving to Shell Knob, Missouri around 36 years ago. She had lived in Monett the last few years, where she volunteered as a pink lady for Cox-Monett Hospital.
