The Monett Cubs soccer team is expecting great things this year.
|"I am really excited about this team and its potential," said Head Coach Jeremy Wilson|
The soccer Cubs finished the 2009 season 10-8 and are looking to build off that success.
"The team's biggest gain in the off season has been in the chemistry department," said Wilson. "Soccer is a free flowing sport where you have to anticipate where your teammate is going to be."
Returning for the Cubs is first team All District senior Abraham Mejia.
"Mejia is a rare athlete," said Wilson "He is good at every sport he plays, he listens and is an easy kid to coach."
The Cubs also return senior midfielder Pedro Himeraz mid-fielder and senior defender Billy Starkson defender, to help lead the team.
"We graduated several talented players last year," said Wilson "Our biggest concern will be replacing the lost offensive production."
When it comes to scheduling, the Cubs will be tested.
"We play an extremely challenging schedule this year." Wilson said. "We know that it will help us for district play."
Key regular season games for the Cubs are against Aurora on Sept. 2, Cassville on Sept. 7 and Carl Junction on Sept 13.
"The districts have been realigned and District 11 is now compromised of Monett, Cassville, Aurora and Carl Junction," Wilson said. "We believe that the district is wide open and that we have a good chance of winning the title."
"This group of players has a 'team first mentality' they simply want to win," Wilson said.
Monett opens the season at home Sept. 2 aganist Aurora.
