Monett softball looks to build off record year

Wednesday, August 18, 2010

Monett Lady Cubs softball had a record setting last season. They finished 2009 with a school record 17 wins.

In 2010 they look to break that record again.

"We lost four girls due to graduation from last year's team," Head Coach Ty Goetz said. "We didn't know what to expect from this team as we headed into our summer workouts."

What Coach Goetz learned this summer gave him a reason to smile.

"We finished 7-3 in the Ash Grove summer league," said Goetz. "More importantly, we got better with every game."

Sophomores Raigan Ratliff and Andrea Soriano hit .438 and .402 while freshman Kelsey Wiseman batted .368 with 6 RBIs in summer league play.

The Lady Cubs have several key players returning.

Senior pitcher Paige Marney, who was selected first team All-Conference and second team All-District returns. She had a 1.07 ERA and finished the season 15-7.

Seniors Anna Arnaud, Logan Swope, Katie Upchurch and All-Conference honorable mention Avery Bollnous will also help lead this team to its goals.

"We are capeable of competing for conference and district titles," said Goetz. "We face a very difficult schedule.

"In our conference, Seneca, Carl Junction and Cassville are always a tough contest," said Goetz. "In district play, Nevada and MacDonald County are always tough."

"This year the Lady Cubs have been invited to play in the Carthage Invitational and the Springfield Tournaments."

"The competition we will face at those tournaments will be top notch," Goetz said. "Springfield hosts one of the largest tournaments in the state. We look forward to the challenge," added Goetz.

Monett will begin the 2010 campaign on the road at Ash Grove Monday, Aug. 24.

The Lady Cubs home opener will be against Crane monday Aug. 27.
