A Mt. Vernon man died Sunday afternoon in a one-vehicle crash on Lawrence County Road 1170 approximately one mile east of Mt. Vernon.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Christopher L. Erganian, 35, was pronounced dead at the crash site at 3:32 p.m. by Lawrence County Coroner Don Lakin.
Erganian was partially ejected from the 1999 Chevrolet Blazer he was driving after he failed to negotiate a curve, travelled off the roadway, struck a guardrail and overturned. The Patrol report indicated Erganian was not wearing a seat belt.
Erganian's death marks Troop D's 55th traffic fatality of 2010.
Other weekend crashes
* A three-vehicle crash on Interstate 44 five miles east of Mt. Vernon left a Springfield woman injured on Saturday night. Nga K. Mai, 53, was treated for minor injuries at St. John's Hospital in Springfield after the car she was riding in was struck by another vehicle. The crash occurred as a 1998 Ford Windstar, driven by Robert B. Bonnow, 78, of Sarcoxie, and a 2002 Lexus, driven by Anh H. Stone, 37, of Springfield, were stopped on the shoulder of the highway when the Stone vehicle was hit by a 2009 Dodge van driven by Claudia C. Engman, 63, of Springfield. This collision caused the Stone vehicle to rear end the Bonnow vehicle. According to the Patrol report, Engman failed to slow as she approached traffic congestion and swerved off the roadway and hit the Stone vehicle. Engman, Bonnow and Stone were not injured in the crash, which occurred at 8:38 p.m.
* A one-vehicle crash on Interstate 44 five miles east of Mt. Vernon on Saturday night was caused by texting while driving. According to the Patrol, Rachael L. Dawson, 36, of Sarcoxie, was treated for minor injuries at McCune Brooks Hospital in Carthage after the car she was driving travelled off the highway and into the median, striking an embankment.
