Firefighters from Pierce City and Monett fought a structure fire at 500 N. Walnut in Pierce City on Friday. According to Pierce City Fire Chief Andy Hogenmiller, fire in the two-story home, dating to the 1890s, was spotted by a neighbor about 6:30 p.m. The owners were not home. The fire started in the upstairs of the house and broke through the roof shortly after firemen arrived. Pierce City

Rural and Monett Rural brought additional men and pumpers to the scene, and the Monett city department brought its ladder truck. Around 7:15 p.m. the roof collapsed. Hogenmiller said the firemen had time to place tarps over property on the first floor to protect it from the water. Firemen had to get all three city wells pumping at once to keep up with the blaze, which they fought all evening.

Firemen returned to the station at 2 a.m. on Saturday but had to return to the fire briefly after it rekindled.

"If it hadn't been for all the manpower from the other departments, we could have been in trouble," Hogenmiller said.
