Arkansas boy hurt in Barry County crash

A five-year-old boy from Bentonville, Ark., was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 37 in Seligman on Saturday night.

Branden Moreton was airlifted to Cox South Hospital in Springfield after the Ford F150 pickup was hit in the passenger side door by a GMC pickup driven by Darrell D. Castor, 50, of Verona.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the pickup, driven by Robert D. Moreton, 52, of Seligman, failed to yield to the northbound pickup driven by Castor.

Robert Moreton was also injured in the crash as was Daniel Moore, 55, of Republic, who was a passenger in the Castor vehicle. Robert Moreton and Moore were both transported by ambulance to St. John's Hospital-Cassville with moderate injuries.

The Patrol report indicated that Robert and Branden Moreton were wearing their seat belts and Moore and Castor were not.

Other traffic crashes

* A Shell Knob man was seriously hurt in a one-vehicle crash on Highway 39 four miles south of Shell Knob on Saturday night. Wayne B. Gottsman, 57, of Shell Knob, was taken by ambulance to St. John's Hospital in Berryville, Ark., with serious injuries after the Dodge Ram pickup he was driving exited the roadway and struck a tree. According to the Patrol, Gottsman was not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred at 9:50 p.m.

* A one-car crash on Highway H three miles southwest of Mt. Vernon left a Joplin man with minor injuries on Sunday evening. Travis P. Chatfield, 31, was transported to St. John's Hospital in Springfield and treated for minor injuries after the car he was driving ran off the roadway, overturned, struck an embankment and overturned again. The crash occurred at 5:55 p.m., and Chatfield was not wearing his seat belt.

* A man and woman from Oklahoma were hurt in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 44 two miles west of Stotts City. James S. Bledsoe, 40, and Katy Rains, 38, were airlifted to St. John's Hospital in Joplin with moderate injuries after the 2001 Harley Davidson they were riding overturned when the rear tire apparently failed. The crash occurred at 1:58 p.m. while the couple were travelling westbound on the highway.
