Six major races at the Monett Speedway provided plenty of action for racers and viewers alike in action last Sunday.
In the Rookies division, Lennie Coats had a lock on the checkered flag, winning both the preliminary heat and the feature race. Clayton Powell found a way to improve from third place in the heat to second in the feature. Frank James pulled from last place in the heat to third in the feature. Janette Murphy and Jesse James finished out the feature lineup.
The Bombers division saw John Coats moving from third in the preliminary to victory in the feature, beating Rusty Forrest, who won the heat. Willie Oxendine finished right behind Forrest in both races. Tony Schmitt found traction in the feature to edge out Garrett Essary, who had Schmitt's number in the preliminary race.
The Pro-4's division proved to be Pat Schudy's race. Taking second in the heat, Schudy stepped up the gas to capture the feature. Theresa Widener, who finished a distant fourth in the heat, moved up to take second. Darrin Widener took third in both races. Randy Roberts moved from sixth to fourth, ahead of Don Lacey, who claimed fifth in both races.
Two preliminary heats led up to the 15-racer face-off in the A-Modifieds division. Terry Beckham III won both the second heat and the feature. Jesse Stovall took second in his heat and the feature. Mickey Burrell climbed from a sixth place preliminary to a third place finish in the feature. Johnny Bone Jr., who took second in his heat, had to settle for fourth in the big race, while Jerry Lankton inched up a slot to finish the feature in fifth.
The B-Modifieds race also had two preliminary heats. Shawn Strong, who entered the feature after skipping the preliminary races, blew away the opposition to take first place. JC Morton took second, Brad Moad was third, and Matt Thompson was fourth, each dropping a place from their opening races. Eric Tenderholt, who won his heat, settled for fifth.
The Late Models division provided the big showdown of the night, pitting 17 racers in the checkered flag dash.
Leslie Essary had the winning way, capturing the feature by beating Rex Merritt, who edged him out for first in the heat. Dustin Mooneyham took third in both of his races. Justin Wells won his heat but had to settle for fourth in the feature. Darrell Mooneyham had similar luck, taking fifth after a third place finish in his heat.
