Wanted: chalk artists to decorate Broadway

Thursday, July 29, 2010

The Monett Chamber of Commerce has announced an artistic event to be held in conjunction with the next Broadway Nights on Aug. 13. A Chalk Walk will offer participants a chance to create art on a section of Broadway sidewalk with special sidewalk chalk.

Participants will receive a 12-piece color chalk pack and be assigned a 4x4-foot sidewalk space. Artists will have two hours to complete their creations. Drawing will start at 4:30 p.m. and stop at 6:30 p.m., followed by judging.

Creativity, imagination and color will be considered. Stencils may not be used. Photos and drawings may be used as a guide. Political or commercial advertising statements will not be allowed.

"Art must be family friendly. Organizers have the right to disqualify and remove any inappropriate art or writing as they deem necessary," the rules state.

All entries will be photographed for display in the chamber office at 200 E. Broadway.

Individuals and teams can enter. Contestants age 15 and older will be entered in the adult division.

Chamber Executive Director Suzy McElmurry discovered similar contests run in other towns and expects to see an enthusiastic response. No entry fee is required.

Entry forms are available at the chamber office, Mocha Jo's, The Trunk, Connie's Photography, Denali Dreams Peppers and Company and Fashion Crossroads. For more information, call 235-7919.
