Harold Schimke

Harold Arthur "Hal" Schimke, age 76, of Freistatt, Missouri was called to his heavenly home on Saturday, July 24, 2010. He was born in Kansas City, MO, on April 7, 1934 to the late Walter and Lillian Schimke.

He held Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Concordia Teachers College, Seward, NE, where he met Dorothy Mae Gerlach. They were married on January 1, 1955 in Kansas City, KS.

Harold is preceded in death by his wife Dorothy. Also preceding him in death are his brother Robert and infant sisters Joanna and Caroline.

He is survived by one brother: John and his wife, Carol, of West Hills, CA; one sister-in-law: Barbara of Camden Point, MO; three sons and four daughters with their spouses: David and Pamela, of Phoenix, AZ; Philip and Susan, of Rocklin, CA; Stephen and Debbie, of Roseville, CA; JoAn and Douglas Markworth, of Chicago, IL; Janet and Simon Begley, of Hannibal, MO; Jean and David Spree, of Mt. Vernon, MO; and Jennifer and Jeremy Schmidt, of Aurora, MO; eighteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

As principal, educator, and music minister, Harold served the following Lutheran congregations: Faith, Council Bluffs, IA; St. Paul, West Point, NE; Immanuel, Waldenburg/Macomb, MI; Trinity, Blue Hill, NE; Trinity, Freistatt; and St. Paul's, Sedalia, MO. Harold was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Freistatt for twenty-five years. He carried on his parents' charitable work with Lutheran Braille Workers, founding Work Center #69 in Freistatt in 1997. Hal was a past president of the Freistatt Lions Club.

The family will welcome visitors from 7 until 9 pm on Tuesday, July 27 at Buchanan Funeral Home in Monett. A celebration of Hal's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 28 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Freistatt. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Lutheran Braille Workers, or Trinity Lutheran School in Freistatt.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Buchanan Funeral Home, Monett, MO.
