Sam Preston Nolan Jr., age 90, of Monett, MO, passed from this life on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at Missouri Veteran's Home in Mt. Vernon, MO, following an illness. Sam was born on September 24, 1919 in Fort Smith, Arkansas, the son of the late Sam Preston Nolan, Sr. and Pearl (Thompson) Nolan.

Sam was raised through his childhood by Sol and Maggie (Nolan) King in Monett. Following his education, Sam served his country in the United States Army, entering into active service on January 21, 1944. He was a member of the Medical Corps during World War II. Sam was honorably discharged on November 16, 1945. He had been employed at Mid-America Dairyman for over 22 years until joining the Monett Police Department on April 20, 1970. He retired in 1984 at the rank of Lieutenant.

Sam was a member of the Faith Worship Center in Aurora, MO, a member of the V.F.W. Post #4207, the American Legion Post #91 and the Masonic Lodge in Monett.

On February 4, 1939 in Cassville, MO, Sam married Beatrice Evelyn (Ogle) Nolan. She preceded him in death on May 3, 2009. Also preceding him in death, his half-brother, John Nolan; his half-sister, Viola Cooksey; his step-sister, Myrtle Rutherford; and his son-in-law, James Crawford. Survivors include four sons: John Nolan, of Kansas City, MO; Ralph Nolan and wife, Claudia, of Monett; Michael Nolan and wife, Joy, of Yukon, OK; and Monte Nolan and wife, Anna, of Aurora, MO; one daughter: LaTricia Harris and husband, William, of Neosho, MO; 18 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandchild.

Funeral services for Mr. Nolan will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Buchanan Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in the Monett I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Full military honors will be provided.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, July 9 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions have been requested to the Salvation Army in care of the funeral home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Buchanan Funeral Home, Monett, MO.
