One killed, four hurt in separate crashes

A Rocky Comfort woman was killed and four Pierce City residents were hurt in separate vehicle crashes yesterday.

Elizabeth J. Merriman, 42, of Rocky Comfort, was killed in a crash at 5 p.m. yesterday three miles north of Powell on Pinelog Road in McDonald County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Merriman was westbound on a 1981 Ford Tractor and drove off the right side of the road. The tractor struck a tree, and Merriman was thrown from the vehicle. Merriman was declared dead at the scene by McDonald County Coroner Tracy Dowd.

Four Pierce City residents were hurt in a two-vehicle crash at 4:10 p.m. yesterday on Highway 37 in Wentworth. According to the Patrol, Levi Gaches, 25, of Pierce City, made a left turn in a 1997 Chevrolet in front of a westbound 2002 Infinity driven by Jessica Heidlage, 18, of Pierce City. Gaches received moderate injuries. Gaches' passengers, Jared Cooley, 22, McKenzie Cooley, 5, and Reese Cooley, 2, all of Pierce City, received minor injuries. All were taken to taken to Cox Monett Hospital for treatment. Heidlage was not injured.
