Money scam hits Barry County area

Wednesday, June 23, 2010

The Barry County Sheriff's Department has issued an alert about an ongoing money scam.

Recently, area residents have been reporting that they have received notification by mail or e-mail that they have won cash or a prize. These notifications ask recipients to send in money to claim their cash or prizes. The scam artists are also trying to obtain an individual's bank account number, Social Security number and date of birth.

Barry County Sheriff Mick Epperly said the solicitors are from out of the country, making it hard for them to be charged with any crime at the local level.

"Most of the time, their numbers are disconnected when you try to reach them," said Sheriff Epperly.

Citizens are warned to ignore the solitications and reminded to never give out their bank account or Social Security numbers.

"If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is," adds the sheriff.

Anyone with questions about possible money scams can call the Barry County Sheriff's Office at 417-847-6556.
