Monett's Jacob Fair wins major youth golf tournament

A Monett High School golfer has captured the title in the 2010 Junior Match Play Championship, held June 9 to 12 at John Daly's Murder Rock Golf Course in Branson.

Jacob Fair, who will begin his junior year at Monett this fall, shot a 77 to earn a fifth place seed in the field of 32 golfers to qualify for tourney action as the event opened on June 9. The following morning, Fair was paired with Michael Becker, of St. Louis. The two went shot for shot through the entire round, forcing an extra 19th hole, which Fair won 1 up.

That afternoon another round was played with the 16 remaining golfers. Fair won 3 and 1 against RayVaun Christenson, of Ozark, who was the 12th seed.

The quarterfinal round was held on Friday, June 11. Rain and lightning disrupted the match after one hole, with only three holes played. Undaunted, Fair resumed his play later in the day, beating Joey Johnson, of Ozark, by 4 and 3.

The semifinal round in the afternoon in 90-degree temperatures. Fair went against Austin Lowe, of Kansas City. The match proved to be quite competitive but Fair again prevailed, winning 1 up.

The final round was held on Saturday, June 12. David Bailey of Springfield played Fair for 36 holes. Fair took home the championship title.
