Sportsworld creates opportunities

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

The Sportsworld baseball team may be new to the scene, but its lineup is full of familiar faces. With the growing popularity of American Legion baseball, competition for the spots on area teams has become fierce. Plus, some legion teams also serve as offseason programs for the school team of the city's Legion post.

Some area coaches tackled the problem head on and formed the Sportsworld team to meet the need. Purdy's Joshua Hughes, Southwest's Kenny Ferguson and Wheaton's Kevin Schessman co-coach the squad, which has a roster of players from Seligman, Washburn, Exeter, Purdy and Wheaton. The team is not affiliated with an American Legion post but does play some Legion teams in a still-developing summer schedule.
The rotating coach system also helps the area schools involved to meet the 25-day contact limit imposed by MSHSAA for summer training and conditioning.
The team sported a 7-1 record going into a June 9 doubleheader against Springfield Central at Purdy. Kyle Robbins pitched a masterful game as Sportsworld earned a 13-1 victory in the rule-shortened opener. Only Ross Watson's solo home run in the top of the third inning spoiled Robbins' bid for a shutout.
Sportsworld scored four times in the first inning. Jake Shrum drove in Sean Goosetree with an RBI single, Cody Hall belted a two-RBI triple, and Devon Bennett plated Hall with a sac groundout.
The Sportsters added two more in the second and scored five times in the third inning. Hall led off the inning with a home run over the fence in left center, and Reece Stevenson and Shrum finished the inning with back-to-back RBI doubles. With the score at 11-1, the home team added two punishment runs in the fourth, and the game was called after Robbins blanked Central in the top of the fifth. Sportsworld will play doubleheaders again at Purdy on June 17 against Miller at 6 p.m. and on June 21 against Billings at 6 p.m.
