The city council in Pierce City met in special session last week to approve a settlement with Alltel for unpaid back business license taxes. The deal, arising out of a class action lawsuit with other cities, will bring $20,755.71 to the city. Funds are expected to be paid in August.
The special session was held to meet a deadline set by the court. According to Clerk Julie Johnson, towns get different settlement amounts based on when they had a specific ordinance in place. Had Pierce City had an ordinance in place by September 2005, the settlement would have been $6,050.70 greater. Aldermen passed Pierce City's version of the ordinance in September 2006.
Aldermen achieved a quorum for the meeting by having David Jones vote over a telephone connection placed on speakerphone in the room. Jones subsequently signed an affadavit at city hall confirming his presence on the phone. This is the second time in a month the council held a special meeting with an alderman voting over the phone.
Johnson said the settlement money is already committed to various expenses, such as the annual audit.
