After winning district titles and qualifying most of the boys' team and a good portion of the girls' team at sectionals, Pierce City went on to compete at the track and field state championships last week in Jefferson City.
Maplewood-Richmond Heights won the boys competition with 75.25 points. The PC Eagles took 15th with 17 points.
Derek Turner's leap of 6'4" earned second place.
The 4x200 relay team of Jordan Saffer, Tony Martin, Cedric O'Hara and Cody Cox took third place.
Zach Crouch finished sixth in the shot put.
The 4x800 relay team of Derek Turner, Caleb Adams, Wayne Joe Sooter and Robert Baldwin took eighth.
On the girls side, Sara Stearns took sixth in the discus, and Makina Kelley was ninth in the pole vault. The team scored three points and came in 55th.
Just five years ago, the entire team had but nine participants. Now pushing four dozen athletes, the small Class 2 school has rebuilt the program under Coach Brad Hocker and is a perennial winner in regional meets.
