Tennis Cubs earn respect at districts

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

The Monett Cubs tennis team competed in the district playoffs at Rogersville on Monday afternoon and won every one of their first round matches.

The team moved up a notch from last year with the fifth place finish, scoring 11 points. Thomas Jefferson won with 34.5 points.

#1 singles Al Dohmen defeated Taylor Jenkins, of Republic, 8-5. Dohmen was the only Cub to triumph in the second round, defeating the tourney's fourth-seed, Chris Jenkins, of Reeds Spring, 8-6. Dohmen lost in the third round to Forsyth.

The Cubs' other singles player, Caleb McCurry, beat Shea Smith, of Reeds Spring, 8-4. McCurry lost in the second round to Webb City.

The doubles team of Abraham Mejia and Andres DeLeon beat the Clever team 9-7 and later lost to Mt. Vernon.

Doubles Shane George and Alex Hall beat Clever 8-1 and then lost to TJ.

"This was a great group of boys to take to districts," said Monett Coach Bob Crain.
