Plans are advancing for Monett's Fourth of July celebration. The new committee overseeing the community event has contacted an entertainment company to provide rides and carnival games.

The Fourth of July Committee is planning to continue the traditional celebration at Monett's South Park on July 4. A patriotic address is planned for 8 p.m. followed by fireworks presented by A.M. Pyrotechnics beginning at 9:30 p.m.

At a meeting of the committee this week, plans were made to work with Star-Walk Entertainment, an Arkansas-based amusement firm, to provide activities for the event. If the committee can sell 600 armbands providing admission to all the offerings, Star-Walk will bring 17 different rides and games to Monett.

In a strategic move putting the entertainment visible from the road, the committee decided to place Star-Walk's offerings in the front part of the park, next to Highway 37. The extended stretch will provide room for the 85-foot-long Iron Man roller coaster.

Additional features will include a BMX demonstration provided by Kevin Eaton and the crew from the Monett Skate Park. The RWTB martial arts school will also show-off their skills.

The local band Speed Shift will play in the evening and then resume playing until midnight after the fireworks. The band specializes in rock and country music from the 1970s to the 1990s. The committee will bring back the post-fireworks dance. Vendors are also invited to stay open until midnight.

To help spread interest in the community gathering, the committee is hosting a T-shirt design contest for children ages 5 to 18. Designs should be submitted on white paper with the artist's name and parents' names on the back. Submissions should have a maximum of four colors.

The T-shirt design contest has been extended to Saturday. Submissions will be accepted at Denali Dreams at 316 E. Broadway. Questions can be directed to Shaun Bennett at 417-772-7092.

The public will vote on the best design between May 10 and May 15 at Denali's, and the committee will make the final selection. T-shirts with the design will be sold on July 4.

Space for vendors is now available. Vendors wanting to reserve booths can contact Josue Cavasos at 236-5843 or Sarah Hohensee, committee chairperson, at 417-669-2019. Reservations can be mailed to the Monett July 4 Committee at PO Box 397, Monett MO. 65708.

A variety of fundraising efforts will take place in the coming weeks to cover expenses for the celebration and the fireworks. Members of the Monett Chamber of Commerce's 2009 leadership class will be selling chicken. Donations for the fireworks display, which costs around $10,000 annually, will also be sought from local businesses and individuals.

Arrangements for the patriotic address speaker are still being made.
