The third annual survivors dinner attracted more than 100 for an evening of food and fun. Helen Ruscha, co-chairperson of the survivors committee with Emma Fae Ruscha, said the event is designed to be a special evening for both Relay for Life organizers and local families participating in the effort.
Food for the dinner was provided by Grant's restaurant. Team captains and members provided salads. Tracy Schallert was in charge of desserts.
Special entertainment was provided by the Relay committee, performing the "Twelve Months of Relay" to the tune of the popular Christmas song. Local businesses donated items for door prizes that were given away through the evening.
The decor for the dinner was based on a birthday theme, celebrating 65 years of the American Cancer Society, which organized in 1945 from the earlier American Society for the control of Cancer.
Special speaker for the evening was Tamara Wilfong, health initiatives community manager for the American Cancer Society. Wilfong spoke about cancer research gains over the past 65 years and the gains made for survivors in the process.
Opening ceremonies for the 15th annual Monett Relay for Life will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday at South Park. Beginning at 5 p.m., there will be games and activities for kids and families to enjoy before the official Relay kickoff. A schedule of activities is published on page 10.
