Pre-registering as a patient at Cox Monett Hospital just got a whole lot easier. The local medical care facility now offers on-line patient pre-registration.
"The industry standard is to have as much information and paperwork done before a patient arrives, and this is one way to do that," said Chris O'Hara, Cox Monett Hospital's patient access director. "One of the biggest benefits to our patients is time and convenience."
Patients can now log onto www.coxhealth.com and create an express patient account. Setting up an account requires that a patient provide his name, last four numbers of their Social Security number, date of birth and e-mail address. When the process has been completed, notification is sent via e-mail and then the patient needs to verify the account.
Once an account has been established, patients can easily log into their account using a user name and password to pre-register for any tests and procedures they are having done at Cox Monett.
According to O'Hara, if someone has already set up a patient express account with Cox Health in Springfield, they are already in the system and a new account is not needed.
Once a person is logged into their account, they must hit the "pre-register" icon to begin the on-line pre-registration process. Required fields will have a red asterisk (*) next to them. Patients will be asked to provide general information, such as marital status, phone number and religious preference, as well as more specific information like emergency contacts, employer and insurance details.
The information patients enter through the on-line patient registry is secure, according to Tamara Bouma, a business analyst with Cox Health's information system.
Bouma said information submitted through the on-line pre-registration process is HTTPS protected and encrypted using the same measures that the Bank of America uses for its on-line banking system.
"Your express account is also protected by a log-in and password," Bouma said. "The new version of our system (implemented in November 2009) is more automated, more secure and more user friendly."
Cox Monett Hospital and Cox Cassville Medical Care Associates in Cassville joined CoxHealth's on-line pre-registration system a month ago.
For O'Hara, patient convenience is the greatest benefit of the new system.
""If patients pre-register on-line, there are less questions we have to ask," said O'Hara. "We try to keep registration down to four or five minutes."
The on-line pre-registration option takes the place of answering pre-registration questions over the phone.
"It's more convenient for patients not to have to spend time on the phone with us especially if they work," said O'Hara. "We're open from 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. but that's not always a convenient time for everyone."
On-line pre-registration allows patients to provide the information the hospital admissions team needs at a time and place that is convenient for them.
"It's very important for us to have the most current information," said O'Hara. "It's very difficult for people who have never moved to understand why we ask all these questions every time, but we live in a transient society where addresses and phone numbers are constantly changing."
If patients do not want to pre-register on-line, they can still pre-register over the phone.
"That will always be an option," said O'Hara. "Our staff is also here to help a person through the on-line pre-registration process.
"I hope we have lots of people take advantage of the new pre-registration option," added O'Hara.
