Verona school board takes action on personnel, building project

Superintendent William Sweet recognized the girls' basketball team for their court and classroom abilities at the Verona School Board meeting in March.

Sweet said that the girls had won academic awards and are excellent examples to their peers and younger students.

The board decided to table bids for the construction project until a special board meeting, which was held on March 23.

Approval was given to Gale Webb Transportation for a one-year contract at the current contract rates.

The salary schedule was approved and the graduate follow-up program evaluation was approved as presented.

The board accepted the resignations of Julie McCollum, paraprofessional, and Cathy Huff, cafeteria worker.

The OPAA Food Service agreement for the 2010/11 school year was accepted.

Cheree Sayers was hired to replace Karen Remington as the advanced level math teacher.

Reports were given by Elementary Principal Jeannie Abeln and High School Principal Terry Winton.

Sweet announced that a census worker would be working in the old music room until April 19. It was also announced that the old agriculture room has been remodeled and will be used next year for the PAT program, which is overseen by Melvey Hillhouse.

In closed session the board voted to rehire the following teachers: Rebecca Bauer, Tracy Clements, Tabitha Farris, Jennifer Rice, Michelle Riedel, Cassie Bennett, Jamie Miller, Shelley Blackburn, Beth Fenske, Allison Calhoun, Wendy Lueckenhoff, Dennis Graves and Ryan Yates. The board voted to not renew the contract of Darcy Brown.

Board members attending the meeting were Donnie Craft, Roger Bandy, YaVonne Koehler, Gary Wolf, Dale Whitlock, Ed Kristek and David Doner.

A special board meeting was held on March 23.

Attending was Dr. Dennis Cooper and Jennie Vandelicht, from MSIP review team and Richard Werner, school architect.

Cooper explained to the school board what would be occurring during the school's MSIP review. He went over the school's APR and explained the areas that were good and those that needed improvement. He also explained the difference in a targeted review, in regards to the Communication Arts MAP scores. He questioned the board regarding policies and their role in the development of curriculum and the overall policies of the school.

Tony Hopkins and Kirk Looney, from Springfield Building Incorporated (SBI) were also present at the special meeting. Werner discussed "value engineering" options prepared by SBI on the school's locker room addition. The board accepted the amended bid from SBI.

The next meeting of the Verona School Board will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 15.
