Steward tapped as state's top principal

Wednesday, April 7, 2010

Monett High School Principal David Steward has been selected as the 2010 Missouri High School Principal of the Year by the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP). The selection was made from a field that includes more than 600 high school principals across the state of Missouri.

Steward's recognition was based on his impact in the areas of collaborative leaderships, his curriculum, instruction and assessment skills and his personalization of the learning environment.

Monett Superintendent Dr. John Jungmann describes Steward as possessing tremendous people skills and an incredible knowledge of effective instruction.

"Mr. Steward's commitment to student success and willingness to take risks has helped Monett High School reach higher levels of achievement than ever before," said Dr. Jungmann.

These qualities have translated into increased Advanced Placement offerings for students and the creation of a more rigorous instructional program for all students.

"One thing I have always appreciated about Mr. Steward is that he is always thinking about how to get better," said Dr. Jungmann.

"What the faculty and staff at MHS are doing today is good, but he is never satisfied with the status quo," continued Dr. Jungmann. "He works hard with the MHS building improvement team every year to brainstorm new ideas and implement changes that are designed to increase learning and help the students reach their full potential."

Steward has served as principal of Monett High School for the past eight years. He spent two years as MHS assistant principal before earning the top post. He also served as assistant principal at Cole County R-5 Schools during the 1999-2000 school year.

Steward received his bachelor of science degree at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1993. He also holds a master of education degree and an education specialist degree from Missouri State University in Springfield.

MASSP will officially present Steward with his award during the annual MASSP/MCCTA Fall Conference, which will be held Oct. 4 at the Holiday Inn Select in Columbia.

"Mr. Steward is a tremendous asset to our community and schools," said Dr. Jungmann. "One trait of great leadership is surrounding yourself with quality people who have positive attitudes and work hard. Mr. Steward has done just that; he has assembled a tremendous team at MHS who focus their efforts on meeting the needs of our students everyday."
