Cub boys take first at RS meet

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

The Central Ozark Conference/Big 8 Challenge at Reeds Spring Tuesday proved to be a triumph for Monett's boy and girl teams.

The Cub boys scored 125 points to defeat Bolivar (117), Reeds Spring (100), Cassville (70), Springfield Catholic (65), Mt. Vernon (39) and Aurora (33).

This was an event dominated by Cub runners.

Sophomore Chris Renteria won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs with teammate Micah Miller, a senior, finishing second in each race. A mere 11 seconds divided the runners in three miles of combined running. The 40 points they generated drove the team win.

The other winning race was the 4x100 relay team of seniors Ryan Cody, Christian Privett and Matt Hinkle. The anchor was junior Chris Eimer, who seems to be the linchpin for the entire team.

"He is one of those guys who can do anything," said Coach Andy Lemons. "One of our studs."

Eimer placed third in the long jump and anchored two other relay teams that scored.

Second place finishers included the 4x800 relay team of the Renterias (Chris and Juan), Garrett Dutton and Uriel Rueda. Senior beasts Jason Obermann and Beau Bounous were also runners-up in the shot and discus respectively.

Third place finishers were: Tyler Green in the triple jump; Cody Mahl in the pole vault; and Matt Hinkle in the 100-meter dash. The 4x200 relay team of Tristen Homfeldt, Privett, Hinkle and Eimer also placed third.

Fourth place finishers included: Jacob Murphy in the 300-meter hurdles; and the 4x400 relay team of Dutton, Green, Rueda and athletic machine Eimer.

The Lady Cubs placed second (115 points) behind Bolivar (120). Reeds Spring, Springfield Catholic, Cassville, Aurora and Mt. Vernon ran.

Gold medal victories were achieved by juniors Madison Carlin in the 100-meter high hurdles, Jennifer Frazier in the shot and Desirae Fowler in the discus.

The 4x400 relay team of seniors Sara Hammond and Millie Fulton, freshman Raigan Ratliff and sophomore Sophie Fulton also took first place honors.

Second place finishers were: Sara Hammond, 300 hurdles and triple jump; senior Tiffany Carver, long jump; and the 4x200 relay team of junior Katie Upchurch, seniors Hammond and Fulton and Ratliff.

Third place finishers were: Millie Fulton, 200-meter dash; and junior Hannah Martin in the 3,200 run and high jump.

Monett tracksters compete tomorrow at the Carthage Invitational.
