Charles R. "Dick" Brady, age 87, of Monett, died at 6:55 a.m. on Thursday, March 25 at Lawrence County Manor, in Mt. Vernon.
He was born on Nov. 30, 1922 to James and Nancy (Cox) Darling in Lafayette, Ind.
He married Frances Mae Francis on Jan. 9, 1944 in Long Beach, Calif. She preceded him in death on Nov. 13, 2007.
Dick was a graduate of West Layfayette High School in Indiana and attended Purdue University.
He was a long time newspaper man having worked at the Lamar Democrat in Lamar; Lawrenceville Illinois Daily Record and The Monett Times. He was publisher of The Monett Times from 1973 until retiring in 1989. Dick was a Coast Guard Veteran of World War II. He was past commander of Hobbs-Anderson Post 91 Monett American Legion and was named outstanding Legionnaire of the Year in 1974. He was a member of Tom Wolfe Memorial Post 4207 Monett Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was the first president of the Monett Quarterback Club which later became the Monett Booster Club. He was named Young Newspaperman of the Year by the Missouri Press Association in 1961. He was a recipient of the Monett Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award in 1993. He served as chairman of the Monett Unit of the Salvation Army and headed the Legion's fireworks program on the fourth of July for many years. He was past president of the Monett Lions Club and was active in the Monett Kiwanis Club.
During his years at the The Monett Times he covered 259 consecutive Monett High School Cubs football games.
Survivors include a son: Charles Brady and his wife, Karen, of Monett; a daughter, Charlotte Brady, of Monett; three brothers: Ralph Darling, of Brandenton, Fla., David Darling, of Bend, Ore., and Bernard Darling, of Indianapolis, Ind.; one sister: Martha Eastwood, of Nashville, Ind.; two grandchildren: Charles K. Brady, of Texas; Kristina Hearn and her husband, Ron, of Monett; four great-grandchildren: Abby, Ronnie, Laura, and Kenny Hearn.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, at Monett IOOF Cemetery under the direction of Bennett-Wormington Funeral Home, of Monett, with Rev. Walt Hamer officiating. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 26, at the funeral home.
