Fundraising efforts are underway by the Jolly Mill Board to build the first substantial restroom facility for the popular recreational location.
According to Lee Price, board president, the present restrooms attached to a nearby house are farther from the park activity and not handicapped accessible. The new bathroom will be in a concrete block building on the south edge of the parking lot and will be fully handicapped accessible with separate halves for men and women.
Construction is slated to start on May 1. Estimated cost for the project is $25,000.
To make the restrooms as functional and durable as possible, Price said the new facility will have commercial toilets and sinks plus a hose system for easy washdowns.
Fundraising efforts include a benefit pig roast and barbecue on July 17 where Mark Chapman and several area bands will perform. Price said donations will be a factor in the finished project. The board would like to run a concrete sidewalk from the mill to the restroom for the convenience of handicapped visitors if funding permits.
Jolly Mill Park is located 10 miles southwest of Monett around the historic Jolly Mill, built in 1848 at the town of Jollification. The Jolly Mill Park Foundation was chartered in 1983 to take ownership of the mill and its grounds. The privately supported foundation maintains the site as a recreational facility for the public.
