The Pierce City Eagles ended their season in the semi-final round of the Class 3, District 12 boys basketball tournament at Mt. Vernon.
The Eagles lost to Mt. Vernon, the eventual district champions, 59-45, on Friday night. The Mountaineers enjoyed a 27-17 half-time lead, and despite stronger play in the last two quarters, Pierce City was unable to make-up the early deficit.
The Eagles scored 28 points in the second half compared to Mt. Vernon's 32 to place the final score at 59-45.
Pierce City got balanced scoring from Wayne Jo Sooter, Robert Baldwin and Derek Turner who scored 13, 12 and 11 points respectively. Others scoring for the Eagles were: Cedric O'Hara 5; Cody Cox 2; and Chance Chapman 2.
Mt. Vernon scorers were: Zack Kleine 19; Kaden Jones 15; Jackson Tetenhorst 10; Josh Engler 8; Shane Williams 6; and Blake Grooms 1.
In the other semi-final game on Friday, Southwest lost to Seneca 68-49 setting up a district finale between the Mountaineers and the Indians.
It would be the hosts that earned the district championship title. Mt. Vernon claimed the hardware by edging out Seneca 55-53 on Saturday when freshman Shane Williams flipped in a hook shot at the buzzer for the game winner.
