The Pierce City boys won their district opening game 53-47 over East Newton last night to advance to a semi-final match-up against Mt. Vernon, the host team, at 6 p.m. on Friday night.
Pierce City opened the game with a narrow 12-10 lead over the Patriots after the first quarter. The game remained close through the second stanza, and the Eagles led 22-19 at the break.
East Newton had a scoring surge in the third quarter and jumped ahead 37-30 going into the final quarter of the game. Pierce City turned up the heat, scoring 23 points in the final quarter to East Newton's 10 to claim the 53-47 come-from-behind victory.
The Eagles had three players reach double digits. Robert Baldwin was the team scoring leader with 16 points followed by Derek Turner with 15 and Wayne Joe Sooter with 10. Cedric O'Hara contributed 8 points in the win, and Chance Chapman added 4.
East Newton scorers were: Clint Broyles 21; Brett Black 12; Tucker Anderson 7; Colton Spencer 4; and Nolan Anderson 3.
Girls season ends
The Pierce City Lady Eagles' basketball season came to an end Monday night in the first round of the Class 3, District 12 tournament at Mt. Vernon.
Pierce City lost 56-47 to Ash Grove. The Lady Eagles trailed 31-20 by half but were able to take a slim 38-37 lead at the end of the third quarter, scoring 18 points and limiting the Lady Pirates to only 6.
Ash Grove rallied in the fourth and outscored Pierce City 19 to 9 in the final stanza to earn the 56-47 victory.
Megan Golubski was the Lady Eagles' leading scorer with 12 points. Other Pierce City scorers were: Abby Ashley 10; Rachel Miller 7; Taylor Mettlach 6; Kaelyn Osborn 6; Emily Ashley 4; and Krishna Merriman 2.
Ash Grove scorers were: Katie Weinrels 22; Stasia Phillips 11; Tammy Voorhis 8; Shelly Wilson 7; Abby Christensen 4; and Brodie Skelton 4.
