The Pierce City Eagles closed out their regular season last night with a trip to Liberal, and both teams suffered defeat at the hands of their hosts.
The Pierce City boys led 13-6 after the first quarter but were held to 6 points in the second, which placed the half-time score at 21-19 in Liberty's favor.
The Eagles were limited to only 9 points in the third quarter, and despite scoring 19 points in the final stanza, Pierce City lost 53-47.
Derek Turner led Pierce City with 16 points while Wayne Joe Sooter and Robert Baldwin added 13 and 10 points respectively. Other Pierce City scorers were Chance Chapman with 6 points and Ryan Fitchpatrick with 2.
In the girls game, the Lady Eagles were clipped 50-37 by a strong Liberal squad.
The hosts jumped on top early, leading 19-8 at the end of the first quarter. Despite a second half rally that saw Pierce City put up 23 points, the Lady Eagles could not overcome the early deficit and lost.
The Pierce City girls had balanced scoring but just not enough production. Lady Eagle point-getters were: Taylor Mettlach 10; Abby Ashley 9; Megan Golubski 5; Rachel Miller 5; Becca Hatfield 4; and Brianna Zebert 2.
The Pierce City boys open Class 3 District 12 tournament action next Tuesday, March 2 when they play fifth-seeded East Newton at 6 p.m. in Mt. Vernon. The Eagles are seeded fourth in districts.
The Lady Eagles of Pierce City are scheduled to play on Monday, March 1. Their game begins at 6 p.m. against Ash Grove.
