Lady Cubs beat Aurora 55-46 in district opener

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

The Monett Lady Cubs rode the hot hand of Hunter Glouse to a 55-46 victory over Aurora in Monday night action of the Class 4 District 11 basketball tournament at Republic. Glouse scored 16 points, and three other Lady Cubs reached double figures, to lead the Lady Cubs into a Wednesday night game against top-seeded McDonald County.
Monett played within a point of Aurora in the opening quarter, as Madison Carlin poured in 7 points. Amanda McKinney gave Monett a brief 14-13 lead, sinking a trey with just :35 left in the period. But Aurora's Rachel Crockett got loose for an inside basket, and the Lady Houn's took a 15-14 lead at the first break.
Aurora streaked to a 24-19 lead in the second quarter and appeared ready to pull away. Monett's McKinney banked home a runner in the lane at 1:02, and then Carlin swished a trey from the left corner to earn a 24-24 tie at halftime.
The teams returned from intermission and traded baskets to a 28-28 tie. Then Monett launched a 7-0 run, fueled by a McKinney trey and an inside hook by Jennifer Frazier. The Lady Cubs nabbed every rebound and every loose ball as they gained a 35-28 advantage.
Aurora recovered to score the final two baskets of the period, but Monett still led by 35-32 at the final break.
The first three minutes of the last period saw the lead swing from 3 to 1 to 4 and then back to 2, but always in Monett's favor. Then Glouse exploded with back-to-back three-point plays, and the final free throw of the sequence gave Monett a 50-40 lead with 4:14 to play.
Glouse finished with 10 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter, and the Lady Cubs finished Aurora's season with the 55-46 final.

Coach Derrek Uhl pointed to Monett's exceptional free throw shooting as a factor in the win. The Lady Cubs were 16 of 22 from the line, including 10 for 13 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter.

Monett scorers were: Hunter Glouse 16, Madison Carlin 15, Jennifer Frazier 12, Amanda McKinney 10 and Danielle Neill 2.

Glouse and Frazier had nine rebounds each in the win while Frazier contributed two steals and McKinney tallied four assists.

Monett (9-14) will play McDonald County tonight at 6 p.m. in the district semi-finals.
