Monett junior Ethan Davis ended a perfect season by claiming the 2010 state wrestling championship in the 140-pound weight class at the Class 2 state tournament in Columbia on Saturday.
The talented Cub grappler defeated Caleb Titus, of Oak Grove, by a 9-0 decision to win the state title and close out a tremendous season with a 45-0 record.
This was Davis' third appearance at state and his second title. Last season, Davis brought home a second place medal in the 130-pound weight division, and as a freshman, Davis captured the state title in in the 119 weight division.
To advance to the championship match this year, Davis first pinned Brandon Hammerstone, of Fulton, in the first round in 1:17. In the quarterfinals, Davis pinned Dennis Helt, of Excelsior Springs, in 1:13, and then pinned David Miller, of Platte County, in 48 seconds to advance to the finals.
Monett's Chris Renteria advanced to the second round of wrestlebacks in the 125-pound weight class before losing by decision to Kevin LeClere, of Ste. Genevieve, 11-6. LeClere eventually earned a fifth place state medal. In earlier rounds, Renteria lost by fall to Travis Peter, of K.C. O'Hara, who eventually placed second, and to Brandon Eman-Sturart, of St. Clair.
Matt Schiffner, at 171 pounds, lost by decision, 11-5, to Taylor Baird, of Excelsior Springs, in the first round of the state meet. Baird went on the claim third place. Schiffner then lost to Forest Davidson, of Moberly, by decision (2:45) in first round wrestlebacks.
As a team, Monett placed 21st out of the 47 teams represented at the Class 2 state tournament. Cub grapplers earned a total of 32 points.
