In a very low scoring affair, the Monett girls earned the victory over visiting East Newton last night. The Lady Cubs closed out their regular season with the 35-25 Big 8 win.
|The first quarter was marked by turnovers, blocked shots and missed baskets for both teams. Monett trailed 8-4 going into the second stanza.||The Lady Cubs also had some trouble scoring inside due to Katy Cooper, East Newton's towering center. After a few failed attempts to convert from close range, Monett went to their outside game, scoring three big treys in the closing minutes of the second quarter to narrow the Lady Patriots' lead to just 1 point at 15-14.|
In the second half of the game, the Lady Cubs settled down and took control of the game. Monett outscored the visitors 7 to 4 in the third quarter and 14 to 6 in the fourth to earn the 35-25 victory.
Madison Carlin had a good night, scoring 13 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Hunter Glouse also scored in double digits with 10 points. Others adding to the Lady Cub point total were Amanda McKinney with 8 points and Dedre Beckett and Jenny Frazier with 2 each.
Monett also won the jayvee match 33-28. Anna Cloud paced the young Lady Cubs with 13 points. Other Monett scorers were: Danielle Neill 8; Mackenzie Lay 6; Raigan Ratliff 5; and Jessica Schmidt 1.
The varsity squad, coached by Derrek Uhl, finished the regular season with an overall record of 10-14 and a Big 8 mark of 3-4. The junior varsity team ended their season with a 5-8 overall record and a record of 3-3 against Big 8 opponents.
Monett will open district play on Monday when they face off against Aurora at 6 p.m. in the Republic High School gym.
