The Monett Cubs battled back to defeat visiting Cassville 59-56 in a Big 8 match-up last night.
|The Cubs enjoyed the lead only twice during the span of the game. Monett led 2-0 in the opening minutes of the game and then went ahead 58-56 with 17 seconds to play.||The Wildcats controlled the pace of the first quarter, outscoring the Cubs 16-12, in the first stanza. The two teams traded baskets in the second quarter with both squads scoring 15. At halftime, Cassville led 31-27.|
Coming out of the half-time locker room, Monett looked sharper and stronger. The Cubs were outscored 18-16 in the third quarter but then took over the game in the fourth.
With five and a half minutes left on the clock, Monett tied the game at 50-50. Cassville went ahead by a basket and then Spenser Witt was sent to the free throw line where he calmly hit back-to-back baskets to knot the score again at 52-52 with 3:30 left in the game.
The Cubs tied the game again at the 1:10 mark when Kennon Cox got his turn at the charity stripe and hit both his shots to put the score at 56-56.
With only 17 seconds on the clock, Monett's Josh Shaner scored to put the Cubs up by 2 at 58-56. A missed free throw by Cassville and a rebound by Monett gave the Cubs the ball back with less than a second to go. Spenser Witt was fouled and again went to the line, hitting one of two free throws.
Cassville got the ball back with only :08 showing on the clock. A long heave from center court didn't fall, and the Cubs earned the 59-56 victory.
"Once again, the boys kept battling from behind and found a way to win," said Coach Ty Goetz. "We didn't execute like we wanted to early in the game but were able to when we had to.
"I also give credit to Cassville for playing well," added Coach Goetz.
Cox had a big night with 19 points with Spenser Witt adding 13 to the Cubs' point total. Other Monett scorers were: Kyle Woods 9; Shaner 6; Tyler Green 4; Devin Steward 4; and Trenton Peirce 4.
In the junior varsity contest, Cassville prevailed 47-39. Steward and Jarred Witt led the young Cubs with 9 points each. Others adding to the Monett total were: Travis Thompson 8; Jacob Fair 4; Caleb Blue 3; Tyler Webb 2; Christian Wooldridge 2; and Aaron Hall 2.
The Cubs will close out the regular season at home on Friday when they host East Newton. Friday's game will also be the annual Rose game, which was postponed from earlier in the season.
Another epic battle lays ahead for Monett and Cassville when the two teams meet in the opening round of districts at Republic next Tuesday night.
