Rape lands Aurora man behind bars for 15 years

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

An Aurora man, who pleaded guilty to multiple charges of rape and sodomy in Stone County, was sentenced on Tuesday to 15 years in prison.

Kevin D. Padgett was sentenced by Judge Alan Blankenship on eight counts of statutory rape and 25 counts of statutory sodomy. Padgett pleaded guilty to crimes involving an 11-year-old victim between September 2007 and August 2008. The sentences are to run concurrently by agreement with the victim's family.

"My office is very pleased with the sentences received in this case," said Lawrence County Prosecutor Robert George. "The defendant was married to the victim's mother and was able to hide this activity for over four years.

"Because of the graphic nature of the crimes, the victim did not want to testify in front of a number of strangers," George explained. "This sentence allows us to comply with the victim's wishes and send this man to prison for a number of years."

The case had been transferred from Lawrence County to Stone County at the defendant's request. According to information filed with the court, the deviate sexual acts and rape took place between Sept. 1, 2007, and Aug. 18, 2008, while the victim and her family were living in Lawrence County.

"I want to commend the Aurora Police Department, the investigators with the Missouri Children's Division, the Children's Center in Monett and investigators from White County, Ark. for their assistance in this case," George said. "Because of the quality of the investigation. we were able to obtain a plea on each of the counts, without the need for the child taking the stand."
