Both the Monett boys and girls basketball squads travelled to Seneca last night for a pair of Big 8 games. The Cubs boys lost 75-53 to a strong Seneca team, and the Lady Cubs were defeated 57-41.
Seneca came out firing from the start and was able to overpower the Cubs 18-4 in the first quarter and 28-14 in the second for a 46-18 half-time lead. Monett was unable to recover, and despite outscoring the Indians 35-29 in the second half, it was too little too late.
Monett got balanced scoring from Tyler Green, Kennon Cox and Kyle Woods who scored 14, 13 and 10 respectively. Others adding to the point total were: Jared Witt, 6; Travis Thompson, 4; and Spenser Witt and Aaron Hall, 3 each.
The Cubs are scheduled to host Cassville on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
The Lady Cubs stayed close to their hosts in the early part of the game, trailing by only 1 point (13-12) at the end of the first quarter and overtaking the Lady Indians to lead 22-21 at half.
The second quarter was a completely different game. Seneca came out strong in the third quarter, pouring in 21 points while limiting the Lady Cubs to 4. Although Monett matched the Lady Indians point for point in the final stanza, it was not enough to overcome the third quarter lapse and Seneca earned the 57-41 Big 8 win.
Monett's Hunter Glouse was unstoppable with a game-high 28 points. Other Lady Cub scorers were Dedre Beckett and Aubrey Lemaster with 4 points each, Madison Carlin with 3 and Jenny Frazier with 2.
The Lady Cubs aren't in action until next Thursday, Feb. 18 when they host East Newton to close out the regular season.
