In a close game that featured two well-matched teams, the Monett Lady Cubs were bested by Cassville 50-41 in a Big 8 match-up Monday night.
Monett stayed within a few baskets of their visitors throughout the game, trailing 13-11 after the first quarter and 24-20 at the half. Again in the third quarter, the Lady Cubs were outscored 10-8 to set up an exciting fourth quarter.
Monett threatened to make a comeback in the fourth, tallying 13 points in the final period. The Lady Wildcats hit a string of free throws as time ran out to earn the win.
Sophomore standout Hunter Glouse scored 17 points for the Lady Cubs, and Jenny Frazier added 12. Madison Carlin contributed 8 points while Dedre Beckett and Aubrey Lemaster were credited with 2 points each.
The Lady Cubs now stand at 2-2 in the Big 8 and 8-13 for the season.
In the junior varsity game, Cassville topped their hosts 31-24.
Monett point leaders were: Jessica Schmidt, 9; Mackenzie Lay, 6; Anna Cloud, 3; and Raigan Ratliff, Danielle Neill and Jessica Harper, 2 each.
The girls are in action next on Thursday night when they travel to Seneca for another Big 8 game.
