Playing back-to-back nights, the Monett Cubs fell to a strong Bolivar team 70-53 in front of a home crowd on Friday.
Bolivar got out to a 21-4 lead in the first quarter and Monett was never able to dig themselves out of the early deficit. The Liberators led 41-18 at half before the Cubs seemed to gain some momentum in the last two quarters to outscore their visitors 22-12 in the final frame. The late rally was not enough, and Monett lost 70-53.
"We struggled shooting in the first quarter, and they jumped on us early," said Coach Ty Goetz. "It hurt us playing in a quick turnaround after spending a lot of energy the night before at Mt. Vernon."
Kennon Cox had 20 points for the Cubs while Kyle Woods and Tyler Green added 12 and 10 points respectively. Others scoring for Monett were: Jarred Witt, 6; Travis Thompson, 3; and Trenton Peirce, 2.
"I was pleased to see we never quit and made a run in the fourth quarter," added Coach Goetz.
The Monett JV also started off slowly against Bolivar, trailing 28-16 at half. In the third and fourth quarters, the young Cubs outscored the visitors 31-20 to come within one-point before the final buzzer. Bolivar won the game 48-47.
JV point-getters for Monett were: Jacob Fair, 14; Thompson, 12; Aaron Hall, 8; Witt, 5; and Christian Wool-dridge and Caleb Blue, 4 points each.
