While Monett's Kyle Woods outscored Mt. Vernon's Zack Kleine, 23-16, the Mountaineers got the 64-56 home victory on Thursday night with balanced scoring. Kleine and company outscored Monett in each of the first three quarters and played the Cubs dead even in the fourth to earn the win.

Both teams featured three players in double figures. Besides Woods, Monett's Kennon Cox and Spencer Witt scored 14 and 12 points, respectively. Mt. Vernon's Kaden Jones and Josh Engler answered with 18 and 12.

With a minute to go in the contest, the Cubs pulled within 4 points of their hosts, but the Mountaineers were able to hit their free throws as the clock wound down to secure the win.

"I was very pleased with our effort," said Coach Ty Goetz. "We went into a tough environment against a very good team and gave ourselves a chance to win."
Monett scorers were: Kyle Woods, 23; Kennon Cox, 14; Spencer Witt, 12; Devin Steward, 3; and Tyler Green, 2.

In the jayvee contest, Monett got off to a slow start and was not able to recover despite a strong second half, eventually losing the game 52-39.

Scoring for the Cubs JV were: Caleb Blue, 10; Jacob Fair, 6; Devin Steward, 5; Travis Thompson, Chandler Wammack and Aaron Hall, 4 each; and Christian Wool-dridge and Jarred Witt, 2 each.

Monett will host the Bolivar Liberators tonight. The jayvee game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

Mt. Vernon held Monett to single-digit scoring in the last three periods, tied the game at halftime and then stunned Monett with a 21-3 rampage in the third quarter.
