Census workers wanted

Thursday, February 4, 2010

The U.S. Census Bureau is looking for employees in Barry County. These individuals will assist with the 2010 Census count.

"Anyone over the age of 18 can apply for a job through the Census Bureau," said Tencha Wilcox, of the U.S. Census Bureau office in Springfield. "We have a really nice website, 2010censusjobs.gov, which lists the qualifications for employment. People can also call our jobs hotline for more information."

According to Wilcox, Census jobs offer flexible hours that could be ideal for unemployed individuals or community members seeking a second job.

"Census workers work in small crews," said Wilcox. "They mostly work out of their home, and their hours are worked out with their crew leader. We have jobs for individuals in the days, evenings and weekends.

"I know there are a lot of people out there looking for jobs right now, and this can provide a very good cushion of support for anyone interested in temporary employment," said Wilcox.

Census employees receive paid training to complete their field work assignments, which include hand delivering forms to residents. Employees also receive mileage reimbursement.

"Census workers collect date from the front door," said Wilcox. "They never enter a home."
