A first half spurt gave the Monett High School boys basketball team enough of a lead to carry the Cubs to victory at home last night over Carl Junction 56-48.
The Cubs took control of the game early, securing a 12-5 lead in the first quarter that built to a 28-17 advantage. The Bulldogs narrowed the margin by five points in the third quarter. A high scoring but even final stanza enabled Monett to put the game away.
"The boys came out and got on Carl Junction early," said Coach Ty Goetz. "I was proud of our effort and execution on both ends of the floor. It was nice to beat them on our home floor after they beat us last week on theirs."
Kyle Woods led the charge with 21 points and six rebounds. Kennon Cox had 11 points and two assists. Josh Shaner had 11 points and six rebounds.
Also scoring for Monett were Tyler Green and Spenser Witt, each with four points, Devin Steward with three points and Trenton Peirce with two points.
In the junior varsity game, the Cubs were down by a basket going into the fourth quarter and went cold on shooting, falling 36-29.
Scoring for the Cubs were Jacob Fair with eight points, Travis Thompson with seven, Tyler Webb with six, Devin Steward and Aaron Hall with three each and Jarred Witt with two.
