Monett Cubs jump on CJ early

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

The Monett Cubs avenged an earlier tournament loss by soundly defeating Carl Junction 56-48 for a Big 8 Conference victory before a home crowd.

Monett outscored the Bulldogs 12 to 5 in the first quarter to set the tone for the game. By halftime, the Cubs led 28-17 and Carl Junction was unable to narrow the gap.

"The boys came out and got on Carl Junction early," said Coach Ty Goetz. "I was proud of our effort and execution on both ends of the floor. It was nice to beat them on our home floor after they beat us last week on theirs."

Kyle Woods sparked the Cubs with 21 pounds and four rebounds. Kennon Cox and Josh Shaner both added 11 points each. Tyler Green was the Cubs' leader on the boards with eight rebounds with Shaner contributing six. Spenser Witt had three assists and Cox was credited with two.

Others scoring points for Monett were: Green and Witt, 4 points each; Devin Steward, 3 points; and Trenton Peirce, 2 points.

In the jayvee game, the Cubs also posted a win over CJ by a score of 36-29.

Scoring for the young Monett squad were: Jacob Fair, 8; Travis Thompson, 7; Tyler Webb, 6; Steward and Aaron Hall, 3 each; and Jarred Witt, 2.

The Cubs are back in action on Friday night versus Lamar for the annual Rose homecoming game.
